The 12-week Boating
Course provides in-depth boat operation and safety training.
You will experience the challenge of plotting and
navigation. Comprehensive student materials are provided.
The course includes significantly more information than is
found in the short BoatPro/PCOC course and is an essential
basis course for anyone planning on handling a vessel on the
Great Lakes. Enroll the family! Exam for the "Boat Licence"
is included. This course now includes first-year membership
in CPS for successful graduates.

Seamanship (formerly Piloting)
Monday,

advanced level course, Seamanship furthers your pleasure by
strengthening your boating skills. The Seamanship Course
extends the navigation and vessel-handling techniques
introduced in the Boating Course.
The course presents the three aspects of
seamanship.
1. Navigation and Plotting Skills (both
traditional and electronic): interpretation of charts and
chart symbols; the DR plot; bearings; Fixes and running
Fixes; determination of course to steer in a current, and
determining distance off.
2. Seamanship Skills: understanding the
hazards of weather, wind, waves, currents, tides and tidal
currents, and how to deal with them and with emergencies.
3. Boat Capabilities and Performance:
hull speed, stability, rudders and propellers.

Navigating
with GPS
Complete in 4 evenings, plus exam
Not
offered in Winter 2010 Instead, we will offer the new
Electronic Charting course.
This
short course will introduce you to the versatile Global Positioning System
(GPS) receivers that are now common in everyday life. The new
Navigating With GPS (revision 4) is a complete re-write of the previous
course, with a new colour manual and an accompanying CD which includes,
amongst other things, a GPS/Chartplotter simulator. All of the students
receive a copy of the CD with their manual.
A national survey was recently
taken of Boating Course graduates. They were asked what courses they
wanted to take next. GPS was the most requested.

Electronic Charting

This course takes over where Navigating with GPS leaves
off, with the more advanced features of electronic
charting. Learn about the different kinds of electronic
charting, how they were developed, their advantages and
disadvantages, and how to use them in a practical manner.
Get the latest information about connecting your GPS to a
laptop, desktop, PDA or tablet computer, and the use of
navigational programs for computers.
You get
practical knowledge by using an electronic charting program
that is included on the accompanying CD with over 200
electronic charts.

Fundamentals of
Weather - don't leave port without this course!

Starts April 14, 2010- 6 weeks 7 - 9:30 pm
This course covers many aspects
of the formation and behavior of the weather around us.
Meteorology (the study of weather) is quite technical in
nature. In contrast, “Fundamentals of Weather” is
presented in a straightforward manner eliminating much
of the jargon.
The study of weather is both fascinating
and satisfying. The skills you will develop from this course
will serve you for a lifetime. With practice, it will become
possible for you to make short term forecasts. Challenge the
professionals as to who better predicts the weather in your
local area.
With “Fundamentals of Weather” you will forecast the
weather beyond “red sky at night”.

The Weather
course is presented by Joni Alexander, JN, who says
of of her experience:
" I've been sailing, mainly on Lake Ontario, for almost 20
years and have been a CPS member since 1990. I have been
teaching as a part-time occupation for over 30 years and
teaching CPS courses-- Boating and Weather-- for about 5
years. My special interest is weather and the picture is me
checking on the weather observation buoy located between
Toronto and Niagara! "

Maritime Radio (VHF with
DSC) - radio licence is mandatory for legal radio operation.

December 8 -
14 - 17, 2009. 3 evenings including exam.
Materials include extensive student manual and a CD with
simulation programs.
The ROC(M) - otherwise known as the VHF operator
certificate, is required to operate a VHF radio in
Canada.
The Maritime Radio course teaches
emergency radio procedures, as well as everyday
operating techniques to you and your family. As well,
the course prepares you for the Restricted Operator
Certificate (Maritime) with DSC Endorsement examination.
In module 1, you will be taught the
uses of marine radios, choice of frequencies, operation,
phonetic alphabet, procedural words and phrases.
Module 2 covers Digital Selective Calling
and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System,
(DSC/GMDSS). All mariners, including recreational boaters,
will want to take advantage of the many features and
capabilities of this innovative form “automatic” radio.

Extended Cruising - for the serious cruiser

weeksThe “Extended
Cruising” course helps establish the skills required for you
to seek distant shores. Course Instructor Wanita Gray,
(Squadron Training Officer) is an accomplished Bluewater
sailor with many thousands of miles experience offshore.
Individual course sections are taught by several
highly-experienced offshore sailors.
To roam upon the seas has long been a
dream of many adventurous sailors. In today’s fast paced
life, the sea remains one of the few places where one can
explore our planet while making a personal journey as well.
To make port successfully after a long
sea voyage using your own boat and skills is a great
accomplishment.
Offshore sailors must be able to fill all
the roles of helmsperson, navigator, plumber, meteorologist,
shipwright, radio operator, cook, doctor, sailmaker,
mechanic and diplomat.
A combination of knowledge and experience
coupled with the essential traits of patience and planning
will lead towards rewarding voyages.
